Shopping in the city centre

With more than 2.5 m² of sales area per resident, Magdeburg has proven to be the number one in Germany in terms of sales floor space.

The city has become a modern metropolis with much to offer its residents and visitors alike such as easy accessibility and short distances to shopping facilities.

If you feel like shopping, take a stroll along Magdeburg's traditional shopping boulevards Breiter Weg und Ernst-Reuter-Allee or visit the many shops in the districts of Neustadt and Sudenburg as well as our weekly markets. You can also check out the shopping centres dotted around the outskirts of the city.

Whether it rains or not, you can have a day of fun in the large centres such as the Allee-Center, the City-Carré or the Ulrichshaus. The big department stores such as Karstadt, Papenbreer and C&A are also worth a visit as they offer a wide variety of entertainment and shopping events such as exhibitions, after work parties and readings.



Allee Center

The Allee-Center, opened in Septemer 1998, lies in the heart of downtown Magdeburg where you can shop to your heart's content and then relax in one of the cosy cafés which line the popular glass-roofed shopping passage.

The Breiter Weg, Magdeburg's High Street, with its long and colourful history is where the pulse of the city beats fast.

City Carré

The City Carré is favourably located in the heart of the city centre across from the main entrance of the central station. With approx. 1200 parking spaces offered by the City Carré's underground parking, the parking situation is excellent.

The Ulrichshaus provides a collection of fine shops, retailers and offices, all under one roof, and is located across from the Allee-Center in the heart of the city.

At Hasselbachplatz, which is named after a former major of Magdeburg (1809-1882), you can marvel at the city?s most magnificent Gründerzeit-style facades. This district is home to many pubs, bars and restaurants and is well worth a visit, especially in the evening.

The Green Citadel

One of Magdeburg's most eye-catching attractions for visitors is also one of the last architectural masterpieces designed by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The Hundertwasser Building is located among a mixture of Baroque facades and examples of modern design.

Market days at the Old Market

Magdeburg has a wide variety of weekly markets. The city's most centrally located market is at the Old Market (Alter Markt) in front of the newly restored Old Town Hall.
