The Mayor of Magdeburg
The Mayor is elected every seven years by citizens who are entitled to vote by general, direct, free, equal and secret ballot. The election is based on the majority vote system.
In urban districts as well as in communities with more than 25 000 inhabitants, a mayor is also referred to as "lord mayor" where the municipal code of the Land of Saxony-Anhalt differentiates between honorary and full-time mayors. In the case of the capital city Magdeburg, the full-time elected Mayor serves an entire term of office as head of the municipal administration. In order to perform official and representative tasks, the Mayor is appointed as a civil servant where his salary and additional benefits for carrying out official duties are based on municipal salary regulations laid down by the Land of Saxony-Anhalt.
A mayor’s main task is to represent the city and promote its interests. He/she is the superior of all persons employed by the city and becomes, by virtue of his/her office, a member of the city council which normally includes committee chairmanships. In exercising his/her duty, the Mayor is responsible for a variety of tasks which include:
- preparation of decisions adopted by the city council and the council’s committees as well as their implementation
- duty of disclosure to the city council
- obligation to inform the city council of all important affairs and developments concerning the city
- obligation to object if he/she thinks that a decision is illegal
- right to take accelerated decisions in the case of urgent and non-deferrable matters
