The following information concerns the issuance / extension of a residence permit or a settlement permit.
Studies/doctoral studies pursuant to Section 16, subsection 1 of the Residence Act (AufenthG) and German language course pursuant to Section 16, subsection 5 of the Residence Act (AufenthG)
- Completed application form
- Passport and one biometric photograph
- Enrolment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung)
- Proof of sufficient financial resources to fund your stay (for your first year of stay)
- Proof of health insurance (if applicable, a confirmation pursuant to Section 11, subsection 1 to 3 of Book V of the German Social Code (SGB V))
- Tenancy agreement
- Fees: 30 € to 110 €
Seeking employment after successful completion of studies pursuant to Section 16, subsection 4 of the Residence Act (AufenthG)
- Completed application form
- Passport and one biometric photograph
- Proof of completion of an academic degree or a professional qualification
- Proof of sufficient financial resources to fund your stay (e.g. employment agreement, blocked account, declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung))
- Proof of health insurance (if applicable, a confirmation pursuant to Section 11, subsection 1 to 3 of Book V of the German Social Code (SGB V))
- Tenancy agreement
- Fees: 40 € to 90 €
Gainful employment pursuant to Section 18 et seq. of the Residence Act (AufenthG)
- Completed application form
- Passport and one biometric photograph
- Proof of completion of an academic degree or a professional qualification
- Proof of income for the last three months (for obtaining an extension)
- Employment agreement or, if applicable, the licence to practice your profession (Berufsausübungserlaubnis)
- Proof of health insurance (membership certificate (Mitgliedsbescheinigung))
- Tenancy agreement
- Fees: 30 € to 110 €
Self-employment pursuant to Section 21 of the Residence Act (AufenthG)
- Completed application form
- Passport and one biometric photograph
- Proof of sufficient financial resources (personal capital or loan undertaking)
- Business concept and business registration/ extract from the German Commercial Register (Handelsregister)
- Proof of health insurance (confirmation pursuant to Section 11, subsection 1 to 3 of Book V of the German Social Code (SGB V))
- Tenancy agreement
- If applicable, proof of old-age provision (for persons who have reached the age of 45).
- Fees: 30 e to 110 €
Family reunification to join a German national pursuant to Section 28 of the Residence Act (AufenthG)
- Completed application form
- Passport and one biometric photograph
- Tenancy agreement
- Both spouses must appear in person (for obtaining an extension)
- Fees: 30 € to 110 € (if applicable, submit proof of basic security benefit for job-seekers or social assistance benefit)
Family reunification to join a foreign national pursuant to Section 29 et seq. of the Residence Act (AufenthG)
- Completed application form
- Passport
- One biometric photograph
- Spouse of the applicant must hold a valid residence permit or settlement permit
- Language certificate (level A1), or, if applicable, certificate of attendance of an integration course (for obtaining an extension)
- Proof of sufficient financial resources to fund your stay
- Proof of health inusrance

- Both spouses must appear in person
- Fees: 30 € to 110 € (if applicable, submit proof of basic security benefit for job-seekers or social assistance benefit)
Residence based on humanitarian grounds pursuant to Section 22 et seq. of the Residence Act (AufenthG) (except as provided in Section 25, subsection 1 and 2 of the Residence Act (AufenthG))
- Valid passport

- Employment agreement or apprenticeship/training agreement
- Proof of income for the last twelve months
- If applicable, proof of school enrolment of children (Schulbescheinigung)
- Tenancy agreement
- Proof of health insurance (membership certificate))
- Fees: 30 € to 110 € (if applicable, submit proof of basic security benefit for job-seekers or social assistance benefit)
Settlement permit
Settlement permit
- Valid passport and one biometric photograph

- Employment agreement and proof of income for the last twelve months or, if applicable, business assessment (Betriebswirtschaftliche Auswertung) for the last 24 months
- Tax clearance certificate (steuerliche Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung) issued by the tax office
- Tenancy agreement
- Proof of health insurance (membership certificate)
- Pension insurance history (Rentenversicherungsverlauf)
- Language certificate (Level B1)
- Proof of basic knowledge about the German legal and social system
- Fees: 135 €
Transferring your settlement permit to a new passport
- Old and current passport
- One recent biometric photograph
- Fees: 60 € (if applicable, proof of basic security benefit for job-seekers or social assistance benefit)
Settlement permit pursuant to Section 35 of the Residence Act (AufenthG) (Children's independent, permanent right of residence)
- Valid passport and one biometric photograph
- Completed application form
- School report for the last two terms
- Proof of school enrolment of children (Schulbescheinigung)
- Fees: 55 € to 67,50 €
