Science and research are of great importance for the city of Magdeburg. There are more than 18,000 students at the University Otto von Guericke and the University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal. Renowned research institutions have sprung up in the surroundings of the universities. Scientists from all over the world work in teaching and research.
The scientific institutions have provided a powerful impetus to the development of the city. They offer attractive jobs for highly-qualified employees, which has a positive effect on the demographic development as well as the culture, the social status and the quality of life in the city. As cooperation partners for the local companies, they also constitute an important economic factor for the whole region.
Research and science are changing the cityscape. The university campuses have become attractive areas. We are developing the Port of Science, located directly on the river Elbe, as a quarter for research and innovative enterprises.
