Arrival to Magdeburg

How to get to Magdeburg

There are many ways of travelling to Magdeburg, just a few of which are listed here. A great advantage for every new arrival is the city’s central location in Germany. It can be reached quickly and easily by practically any form of transport you care to name, thanks to its excellent motorway and rail links and its proximity to major airports.

Germany has a dense road network as well as many motorways which primarily connect the major cities and conurbations. If you’re travelling by car, the A2 or A14 motorways will take you straight to Magdeburg.

By air

The nearest international airports are in Frankfurt am Main, Berlin and Hamburg. From there – or indeed from any of the other airports in Germany – you can easily reach Magdeburg by train or bus.

By rail

Trains operated by Deutsche Bahn travel to Magdeburg. Its station is also served by ICE (the Inter City Express) and IC (Inter City) trains and various regional services.

You must purchase your ticket before starting your journey, either at one of the ticket counters in the station, at a ticket machine or even online. Online tickets must either be printed out or downloaded to the Deutsche Bahn app on your phone.

Germany has an extensive network of express and regional train services. However, the cost of fares is relatively expensive in comparison with other European countries. If you already know your travel dates, we suggest you buy advance tickets for a specific train (although these allow you no flexibility in your choice of train). If you book early enough, you can enjoy a considerable price reduction. Accompanying children and adolescents up to the age of 14 can travel free on Deutsche Bahn trains. A flexible ticket will be slightly more expensive, but you are not then tied to a particular train. It can be used for any train on the desired route on its day of validity.

By bus

Another good and convenient way of reaching Magdeburg is a long-distance coach, such as the Flixbus. You can catch a bus from the central bus station (ZOB) right next door to the central train station. The Flixbus also lets you buy your tickets online in advance of your journey. Once you have bought your ticket, it must either be printed out or downloaded to the Flixbus app on your phone.

Rideshare opportunities

In Germany, there is also the option to ‘rideshare’. This is where one person travels by car and offers seats to other passengers.  You can find out more about ridesharing here.
