Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen

968 After the Synod of Ravenna decided on Magdeburg to become an Archbishopry in 967, the inauguration of the city’s first Archbishop Adalbert is celebrated at Christmas time. The dioceses of Brandenburg, Havelberg, Meißen, Zeitz and Merseburg are directly responsible to the Archbishopric.

um 1240 The famous Magdeburg Horseman is erected on the Old Market. This beautiful piece of art is the only freestanding and fully three-dimensional equestrian statue of the High Middle Ages in Europe. Today, the original Magdeburg Horseman made of sandstone can be admired in the Cultural History Museum.
1294 The Archbishop is forced to concede municipal sovereign rights to the citizens. The Council acquires the Office of Mayor and with it full jurisdictional rights.
Ende 13. Jh. Magdeburg becomes a member of the Hanseatic League.
